Running a Local AI Model on Apple’s M5 MacBook Pro: My Hands-On Experience

I Ran a Local AI Model on the New MacBook Pro M5 — Here’s My Experience

Reviewing the new 14-inch MacBook Pro with Apple’s M5 chip is unusually difficult — not because the machine lacks improvements, but because Apple’s M-series laptops have already set such a high bar that incremental gains now feel harder to measure. Each generation pushes performance to extremes, and expectations for the M5 were correspondingly sky-high.

    Familiar design, brighter display

Visually, this MacBook Pro looks unchanged from the previous generation: the same clean lines, matte finish and robust metal chassis. But the display has received a meaningful upgrade. The new Liquid Retina XDR panel now reaches 1600 nits peak HDR brightness, and paired with macOS Tahoe’s dynamic wallpapers, it feels richer and more immersive. In video work — particularly in low-light scenes — the improved brightness and contrast levels make a noticeable difference.

    Ports, charging and practical touches

The laptop’s port selection remains generous: three USB-C ports, HDMI, SDXC card reader, and a 3.5 mm headphone jack. The presence of a native HDMI port continues to be a blessing for presentations and travel, sparing you from carrying adapters.

Charging is available through both USB-C and MagSafe 3, and small fan vents along the sides quietly signal that this is a MacBook Pro — not a fanless Air. Apple claims up to 24 hours of battery life, though, as expected, that figure drops during intensive tasks like video editing or running local AI models.

The keyboard is slightly springier than last year’s version, the fingerprint reader remains reliable, and the oversized trackpad is still best-in-class.

    Who really needs the M5?

For everyday users, the MacBook Air continues to offer more than enough power. But if your work involves 4K video editing, gaming, or running local large language models, the M5 MacBook Pro is a significant step up.

The new chip features four high-performance cores, six efficiency cores, and a GPU that is 60% faster than before — ideal for compute-heavy workloads. Storage speeds are also quicker, making large file imports and exports feel instantaneous.

In real-world video editing tests, the machine handled 4K footage from an iPhone 16 Pro with zero lag. Even multi-clip workflows in iMovie were rendered almost instantly. More advanced software, such as DaVinci Resolve Studio, should pose no challenge.

Running a full AI model locally — and offline

The most striking part of my experience was running an offline AI model directly on the machine. Using MstyStudio and a CSV file containing over 100,000 rows, the model produced insights within minutes — without connecting to the internet.

For anyone interested in on-device LLMs, privacy-preserving analytics, or AI-driven workflows, this MacBook Pro feels like it was built for that future. The raw power of the M5 makes offline inference genuinely usable, not just experimental.

A solid entertainment and gaming machine

Beyond productivity, the MacBook Pro’s six-speaker system is among the loudest and clearest I’ve heard on a laptop, making films and games genuinely enjoyable. Paired with an external display and controllers, the machine has enough GPU power to serve as a competent gaming device — something my 14-year-old immediately noticed while eyeing it for sessions of eSoccer and Minecraft.

The webcam has been upgraded to a 12MP Centre Stage camera, and macOS’s new desk view mode is now built-in, which should help with demos and presentations.

    macOS Tahoe hiccups

macOS Tahoe is still in its early days, and there were occasional freezes — particularly while downloading apps from the App Store. It’s reasonable to expect a stabilising update soon.

Verdict: a powerhouse for professionals — and for local AI

Starting at ₹1,69,900, the MacBook Pro M5 is a remarkably capable machine that handles demanding workloads with ease while remaining slim and portable. For creators, engineers, and anyone exploring secure, on-device AI, it is a compelling investment.

If you’re upgrading from an M2 MacBook or earlier, the leap in performance — especially for AI, graphics and sustained workloads — makes the M5 an easy recommendation.
