Global Trust in Institutions Crashes as Shared Reality Fragmentation Deepens in 2026

A major new global survey reveals that trust in traditional institutions — including governments, media, and civil society — has plunged to historic lows, sparking concern among sociologists, policymakers, and civic leaders about the future of shared public discourse and social cohesion. The findings, released in early 2026, highlight a deepening crisis of confidence that could have far-reaching implications for how societies govern, communicate, and resolve conflict.

A Sharp Decline in Shared Reality

According to the latest Edelman Trust Barometer, which surveyed tens of thousands of people across more than two dozen countries, only 39 % of respondents now seek information from sources with differing political views, marking a significant drop from the previous year. This suggests that people are increasingly relying on like-minded networks — including ideologically aligned media, influencers, and social platforms — rather than common, trusted sources of information.

Experts warn that this shift does more than reflect political polarization — it signals a breakdown in shared reality, where large portions of the population no longer agree on basic facts about their societies. This fragmentation makes it harder for communities to build consensus on public policy, civil rights, and even science-based solutions to shared problems.

Institutions Lose Ground to Alternative Authorities

The survey found that trust in traditional institutions has shifted dramatically:

    • Businesses are now seen as more competent — and more ethical — than governments by a large margin, a reversal of historical trust patterns.
    • Confidence in media outlets and public institutions continues to wane as audiences turn toward niche figures and platforms that reinforce existing worldviews.
    • Many people say they prefer news from groups and voices that already align with their beliefs, rather than from established organizations that aim for neutrality.

This trust shift underscores the growing influence of fragmented information ecosystems driven by algorithmic content feeds, micro-targeted messaging, and social networks that cater to specific demographics or ideological communities — trends that have only intensified in recent years.

    Social Cohesion at Risk

Sociologists say that shared trust in institutions — from public health agencies to the judiciary — has historically acted as a glue that holds diverse societies together. When that trust erodes, the result can be political instability, reduced civic engagement, and increased susceptibility to misinformation.

In 2026, this erosion is already visible in several arenas:

    • Public debates on climate policy, economic reform, and digital regulation are increasingly shaped by competing narratives rather than common evidence.
    • Youth movements and protests in multiple countries reflect broader discontent with political representation and social opportunity, even as specific demands vary widely.
    • Digital platforms are simultaneously battlegrounds for truth and echo chambers for segmented communities, complicating efforts to build cross-group understanding.

    Looking Ahead

Analysts say the crisis of trust may continue to define global society in 2026 unless collective efforts — including improved media literacy, transparent governance, and cross-sector dialogue — can begin to rebuild bridges. Without a shared foundation of trusted institutions and agreed-upon facts, efforts to address critical issues like climate change, public health, and economic inequality could be undermined by deepening fragmentation.
