At least two people were killed and six others injured in an overnight Ukrainian drone attack on the Moscow region, according to regional governor Andrei Vorobyev.
Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin said Russian air defences shot down 450 drones heading towards the capital, describing the operation as an unprecedented attack. Russian officials said an oil refinery was damaged, while fires broke out at several homes.
Vorobyev said a 44-year-old woman died after a drone struck a three-storey residential building in Sofyino. Five people, including two children, were injured in the same incident. He said an elderly man was also killed when a private house was hit in the Orekhovo-Zuevo district.
Sobyanin said a drone hit a building near one of Moscow’s boulevards and that a facility at an oil refinery had been damaged. He said the attack was an attempt to disrupt Russia’s parliamentary election, for which voting was entering its third day.
Airport disruption and competing claims
Temporary restrictions were imposed overnight at Sheremetyevo, Moscow’s largest airport, while arrivals and departures were suspended at Vnukovo airport. The restrictions were lifted by Sunday morning, although both airports warned that some flights could remain delayed.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said Ukraine had struck what he described as a key Russian oil facility and a logistics site in the region. He said the targets represented billions of dollars sustaining Russia’s war effort.
Social-media footage appeared to show explosions in the night sky over Moscow and a warehouse on fire, but the footage had not been independently verified by the BBC.
The reported attack came as Ukrainian officials said Russian strikes had killed eight people, including three children, in the Kyiv and Sumy regions on Saturday. Authorities said a mother and her two young children were killed in Fastiv, in the Kyiv region, while another child later died in hospital after a separate attack in Vyshhorod.
In the Sumy region, local official Oleh Hryhorov said four people were killed when a Russian drone struck the vehicle in which they were travelling.
Russia and Ukraine have recently increased attacks on energy, transport and logistics infrastructure. The latest exchanges occurred despite US President Donald Trump saying on social media that the two sides had agreed not to target energy infrastructure.
