Police Detain Youth Movement Leaders During Electoral Reform Protest in Delhi

Security forces in Delhi have detained hundreds of demonstrators alongside prominent youth leaders during a protest demanding changes to India’s voting system. The rally was organized by the Cockroach Janta Party, a youth-led group advocating for electoral reforms in the months leading up to crucial state elections.

Authorities deployed tens of thousands of security personnel and set up roadblocks across the capital to prevent demonstrators from gathering. While law enforcement refused permission for the gathering at the Jantar Mantar landmark, organizers attempted to proceed with the rally. Transport disruptions were widespread, with several train services canceled and multiple metro stations closed.

    Leader Detentions and Protest Demands

Movement founder Abhijeet Dipke and fellow leaders Saurav Das and Ashutosh Ranka were taken into custody shortly after arriving on a flight from Mumbai. According to the group, the three individuals were taken to an undisclosed location. The movement designated Ajinkya Shinde to lead in their absence, while detained student activist Neha Bora urged supporters to continue their efforts.

The group is calling for the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, accusing officials of manipulating voter rolls to favor the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party. Opponents and protesters claim tens of thousands of individuals were improperly erased from voter registers. Both the Election Commission and the ruling party have rejected the allegations, stating that the nationwide revision of electoral rolls is a standard administrative effort to remove duplicate, deceased, or ineligible records.

    Origins of the Youth Movement

The Cockroach Janta Party, which is not registered as an official political party, originated from a online post by Dipke in May following remarks by Chief Justice Surya Kant regarding unemployed youth. The movement grew rapidly amid widespread public frustration over joblessness, government accountability, and examination leaks.

The current demonstrations follow a previous five-week protest campaign organized by the group over the summer, which concluded after the resignation of Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan. Delhi Police have not publicly commented on the recent detentions, though law enforcement vehicles were seen transporting detained individuals away from demonstration areas.
