Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has defended his government’s military actions, stating that he is acting solely to protect his nation’s interests. His comments followed sharp public criticism from US President Donald Trump, who claimed the Ukrainian leader was more challenging to work with than Russian President Vladimir Putin.
Speaking at a European Union summit in Brussels, Zelensky addressed growing friction with Washington over Kyiv’s decision to resume strikes on Russian oil refineries. The US administration had recently reached an agreement with Moscow to import Russian diesel to curb rising domestic fuel prices. Zelensky expressed strong opposition to the deal, warning that accepting it could open the door to further energy concessions to Russia.
European Leaders Voice Support Amid Escalating Tensions
European officials rallied around the Ukrainian president during the summit, where discussions centered on securing energy supplies, defense funding, and aid to help Ukraine endure the upcoming winter. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen reaffirmed the bloc’s commitment, noting that sanctions against Moscow needed to be tightened due to continued Russian targeting of Ukrainian power and water facilities.
Strains between Washington and Kyiv have intensified beyond energy policy. Ukrainian operations recently faced disruptions after restrictions were placed on the US-owned Starlink satellite communication network, which is vital for Ukrainian defense forces. Furthermore, the Trump administration previously indicated it could curtail military intelligence sharing if Ukraine continued targeting Russian petroleum infrastructure.
Continued Military Strikes on Both Sides
Despite diplomatic efforts to establish an energy infrastructure truce, military engagements have persisted. Ukraine reported severe overnight Russian drone attacks affecting power networks and causing fatalities in several regions. Simultaneously, Ukrainian forces launched extensive drone operations targeting facility sites and energy infrastructure across multiple Russian provinces.
Zelensky indicated that Ukrainian negotiators remain hopeful about holding discussions with US representatives in the near future. He reiterated that while Kyiv desires a swift end to the conflict, defensive preparations must continue as long as Russian military aggression persists.
