Over 1,000 Arrested in France Following Violent Cost-of-Living Protests

Widespread unrest erupted across multiple French cities during widespread demonstrations over economic hardship and secondary school conditions. According to government reports, more than 1,000 arrests were made as peaceful marches were overshadowed by violent clashes, arson, and property damage.

An estimated 550,000 individuals joined the demonstrations nationwide. While daytime marches in Paris initially remained peaceful, tensions escalated later into the evening. Violent groups torched vehicles, ignited street fires, and targeted businesses and historic infrastructure in key locations, including the Place de la République. In response, security forces deployed tear gas, water cannon, and baton charges to disperse crowds.

Extensive Destruction and Injuries Reported Across French Cities

The unrest caused significant structural damage in numerous urban centres. In Limoges, a severe fire at the town hall led to a partial roof collapse, while the historic tourist office in Lyon was destroyed by fire. Authorities also noted heavy property damage, looting, and vandalism in cities such as Marseille, Lille, Toulouse, Rennes, and Angers, where commercial outlets and local council facilities were targeted.

Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu confirmed that 150 police officers sustained injuries during the disorder, characterizing the acts as highly intense violence. Injuries among demonstrators were also recorded, including a severe injury caused by an explosive device in Saint-Étienne.

    Political Tension Surrounds Escalating Demonstrations

The protests stem from ongoing grievances regarding staff shortages and inadequate facilities in French secondary schools, which have seen sustained student demonstrations in recent weeks. On Saturday, these movements merged with trade unions and participants from the yellow vest movement, who previously staged extensive protests over rising living expenses.

The unrest arrives during a delicate political period ahead of France’s upcoming presidential election. Government officials condemned the violent acts, with President Emmanuel Macron stating that individuals involved in looting and property destruction will face prosecution. Political leaders traded blame over the disorder, with accusations directed at hard-left political figures for encouraging tensions, while critics pointed to excessive police responses.
