Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky is holding diplomatic talks in Oslo with United States envoys in an effort to stabilize relations between Kyiv and Washington. Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre said the meeting, organized alongside Finnish President Alexander Stubb, was arranged at a critical moment for Ukraine to pursue a lasting diplomatic resolution to the conflict.
US special envoy Steve Witkoff is attending the discussions in person, while Jared Kushner, son-in-law to US President Donald Trump, is participating remotely via video link. Before entering the multi-nation talks, Zelensky held initial discussions with the Norwegian and Finnish leaders.
Dispute Over Intelligence and Military Support
The summit follows sharp pushback from US Secretary of State Marco Rubio against allegations that Washington has been withholding critical military intelligence from Ukraine. Speaking during a visit to India, Rubio characterized accusations that Ukrainians were dying due to delayed US intelligence as outrageous and scandalous. He stated that while certain equipment transfers, such as Patriot interceptor missiles, may have experienced delays, nothing was deliberately withheld from Kyiv.
Rubio’s comments came after Ukrainian military technical adviser Serhii Beskrestnov told reporters that inconsistent warnings regarding incoming attacks were costing lives on the ground. Zelensky noted he had a constructive dialogue with Rubio concerning early warning systems, missile interceptors, and access to SpaceX’s Starlink network.
Strained Bilateral Relations
Tensions between the two nations have mounted recently, with President Trump publicly suggesting that new leadership should negotiate on behalf of Ukraine. Friction intensified following a deal between Washington and Moscow that eased US sanctions on Russian diesel exports, coinciding with previous diplomatic talks between US officials and Ukrainian representatives.
US Vice-President JD Vance noted in a television interview that while the US and Ukraine act as partners in certain areas, the two countries hold divergent interests on specific issues, including Ukrainian strikes on Russian energy infrastructure. Meanwhile, European leaders, including German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, pointed out that European nations have been funding Ukraine’s defense burdens directly and emphasized the importance of maintaining a unified approach to ending the war.
