Voters Head to Polls in Brazil for Presidential Run-Off Election

Voters across Brazil have begun casting their ballots in a closely contested run-off presidential election. The race pits current left-wing President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva against right-wing Senator Flávio Bolsonaro, following an initial round of voting held earlier in the month.

The 80-year-old incumbent, Lula, is seeking a fourth non-consecutive term as leader. His opponent, 45-year-old Flávio Bolsonaro, is the son of former right-wing President Jair Bolsonaro. The elder Bolsonaro is currently serving a sentence of more than 20 years under house arrest due to ill health, following a conviction related to a plot to stage a coup after his election defeat in 2022.

    Campaign Strategies and Key Claims

Flávio Bolsonaro entered the second round after securing the highest vote share in the initial round on 4 October. Speaking to reporters outside a voting site in Rio de Janeiro on Sunday morning, he declared that the time had come for change. His platform focuses on tax reductions, public spending cuts, and aggressive measures against organized crime, as well as a pledge to release his father from house arrest.

Lula and his allies have framed the contest as a critical defense of democratic institutions, warning against the return of his predecessor’s political movement. Addressing supporters on Saturday at Copacabana beach in Rio de Janeiro, Lula emphasized national sovereignty and expressed confidence that voters would choose progress over returning to past policies. His administration has also raised concerns regarding external influence in the vote, alleging US interference—an assertion that Washington has rejected as baseless.

    Electoral Dynamics and Candidate Locations

Mobilization efforts intensified ahead of the run-off after 33 million citizens abstained from voting in the first round. Both campaigns held major events across key regions, including Minas Gerais and Rio de Janeiro, to rally turnout among their bases.

As voting concludes on Sunday evening, Lula plans to monitor the election returns from São Paulo. Flávio Bolsonaro will watch the results from the national capital, Brasília, where his father remains under house arrest.
