Tech billionaire Elon Musk stated that his company SpaceX restricted Ukraine's Starlink satellite internet connection, shortly after Ukrainian officials confirmed that recent connectivity disruptions had been resolved.
Musk alleged that Ukraine breached the commercial network's terms of service by employing civilian Starlink connections for offensive drone strikes. He stated that SpaceX acted to close a loophole permitting offensive use, while clarifying that Starshield, a military-grade alternative operated for defense purposes, is controlled separately by the United States government.
Ukrainian Response and Operational Details
Ukrainian presidential adviser Serhii Beskrestnov described Musk's comments as unexpected, pointing out that existing technical safeguards prevent commercial Starlink units from functioning inside Russian territory or operating at speeds above 70 to 90 kilometres per hour. According to Beskrestnov, these built-in limits physically prevent the commercial network from being utilized for medium or long-range attacks.
The service restoration followed statements from US President Donald Trump, who indicated he instructed Musk to reinstate the connection. Ukrainian Defence Minister Yevhenii Khmara and President Volodymyr Zelensky both confirmed that stable, high-speed connectivity has been restored, allowing military systems to operate at required operational speeds exceeding 400 kilometres per hour.
Diplomatic Background and Ongoing Conflict
The network disruptions occurred alongside diplomatic friction between Washington and Kyiv regarding Ukrainian strikes on Russian oil infrastructure. US officials expressed concern that attacks on Russian refineries contributed to rising global fuel prices, leading to broader discussions over military strategy and intelligence support.
The communications issue played out against a backdrop of ongoing combat operations. Ukrainian authorities reported casualties from Russian aerial attacks in the Dnipropetrovsk and Vinnytsia regions, while Russian officials stated that Ukrainian strikes targeted an industrial facility in the Russian city of Oryol.
