Goa Nightclub Fire Leaves 25 Dead as Investigators Probe Suspected Gas Explosion A fire at a popular nightclub in the Indian coastal state of Goa has killed 25 people, according to local officials. Most of those who died are believed to have been employees of the Birch by Romeo Lane venue, located near one of the region’s busiest beaches, though tourists are also among the victims. Police say the blaze is thought to have been triggered by a gas cylinder explosion in the club’s kitchen shortly after midnight on Saturday. Flames quickly tore through the building, prompting scenes of panic in…
What’s Really Happening Inside Apple as Leadership Upheaval Raises Questions For decades, Apple built its reputation on a near-flawless run of design-led, culture-defining devices that shaped the modern tech landscape. But the company long viewed as a model of stability is now entering a rare period of turbulence — just as the wider industry undergoes a major shift. Within a single week, Apple disclosed the departures of several senior executives. Meta has poached one of its leading designers. And speculation continues to swirl around whether Tim Cook may be preparing to step down as chief executive. The shakeup has arrived…
Japan Confronts a Deepening Dementia Crisis – Is Technology the Relief It Needs? Last year, more than 18,000 older people living with dementia in Japan left their homes and went missing. Nearly 500 were later found dead. The figures, released by police, represent a doubling of cases since 2012 and highlight the mounting pressures on a nation with the world’s oldest population. Compounding the issue is a shrinking labour force and strict limits on foreign care workers, leaving fewer hands to look after an ageing society. The government has labelled dementia one of its most urgent policy priorities. By 2030, health…
An instructor at the University of Oklahoma has been placed on leave after a student complained about receiving a failing grade on a psychology assignment in which she used the Bible to argue that the “belief in multiple genders” was “demonic.” The student, 20-year-old Samantha Fulnecky, filed a discrimination complaint with the university — a case that has now become part of the wider national debate over academic freedom, free speech, and how US campuses discuss race, gender, and sexuality. The controversy also comes amid President Donald Trump’s broader push to limit diversity, equity, and inclusion programs and influence how…
Gratitude is as closely tied to Thanksgiving as turkey and cranberry sauce — yet for many people, the thought of “counting blessings” or writing a heartfelt letter feels uncomfortable.“It feels cringe,” says personality psychologist Sarah Schnitker of Baylor University. Still, decades of research show that practising gratitude can bring real benefits: better relationships, greater emotional resilience, and even improvements in blood pressure.“There’s a study linking gratitude to nearly every marker of well-being,” says Michael McCullough, a social psychologist at UC San Diego. He acknowledges that some findings may be overstated due to weak study design, and even the best gratitude…
One of Britain’s most respected scientists, Prof Sir Paul Nurse, says the government is “shooting itself in the foot” with its current visa system for research scientists. Speaking to BBC News, Sir Paul said that high visa fees and financial requirements are discouraging early-career researchers — many of whom are instead choosing countries that actively welcome scientific talent. Supporters of the existing system argue that higher visa charges help fund the NHS and reflect public concerns about overall immigration levels. But Sir Paul, a Nobel Prize winner and now President of the Royal Society, believes the policy is jeopardising the…
Machines used to extract minerals from the deep ocean can cause substantial harm to seabed life, according to scientists who conducted the largest study of its kind. Their research shows a 37% drop in the number of animals living within the tracks left by mining vehicles compared with untouched areas. The team identified more than 4,000 animals in a remote region of the Pacific Ocean — with 90% of them representing previously unknown species. Massive reserves of key minerals used in green technologies may lie deep beneath the ocean floor. But because the environmental impact remains uncertain, deep-sea mining in…
One of Britain’s rarest fungi has been identified on Alderney for the first time, according to the Alderney Wildlife Trust. The species — the date waxcap — was discovered earlier this month by ecologist Niamh McDevitt. The trust says that only around 100 sightings of this fungus have ever been recorded in the UK. Date waxcaps typically grow in unimproved dry grasslands and are known for their distinctive appearance: a watery, glossy head, a brown cap, yellow-orange gills, and a yellow stem. The discovery marks an important addition to the island’s biodiversity records.
Environmental activist Dr Mya-Rose Craig, known widely as “Birdgirl,” says the cultural conversation around diversity in nature has changed dramatically since she began her work a decade ago. Craig founded Black2Nature when she was just 13, aiming to help children from Visible Minority Ethnic (VME) backgrounds experience nature and the outdoors. Now 23, she says the charity’s 10th anniversary highlights just how far things have come—though there is still “a lot of progress to be made.” “It’s amazing to look back at the hundreds of kids we’ve worked with, all the activities we’ve run, and the lives we’ve changed,” she…
Meta is reallocating a portion of its metaverse investment toward developing AI-powered glasses and wearable devices, aiming to take advantage of growing interest in this rapidly evolving segment, the company confirmed. Over the past several years, Meta has spent billions attempting to build the metaverse — a virtual environment where users interact through VR technology. But despite the scale of spending, the company has struggled to convince investors that the concept can become profitable. Bloomberg reported on Thursday that Meta could reduce its metaverse budget by up to 30%. Following the news, Meta’s shares rose more than 3.4%. The company…
