A collection of rare and sacred Islamic artefacts has gone on display at the North Lincolnshire Museum in Scunthorpe. Several pieces are centuries old and, until now, could typically be seen only by those who had travelled to Mecca.

Among the exhibition’s standout items are a key to the resting place of the Prophet Muhammad and a rare section of Kiswa, the ornate cloth that covers the Kaaba — Islam’s most sacred site at the heart of the Great Mosque in Mecca.

Organisers say the exhibition is open to visitors of all faiths and offers a unique opportunity to “connect through history, beauty and craftsmanship.”

    Celebrating Artistry and Spiritual Significance

Abid Khan, representing the North Lincolnshire Multi-Faith Partnership, said the display provides a chance for people to appreciate the exceptional artistry of the artefacts — many of which feature embroidery sewn with 22-carat gold thread.

Describing the pilgrimage to Mecca as “a once-in-a-lifetime journey,” Khan noted how seeing the objects up close can evoke powerful memories:

“When you’re there, there are millions of people — the hustle and the bustle,” he said. “Here, you can touch the items, and it brings all those memories back.”

    A Collaborative Cultural Event

The exhibition is organised by the Kiswa Arts and Culture Gallery in partnership with the North Lincolnshire Multi-Faith Partnership, with support from North Lincolnshire Council and the National Lottery Heritage Fund.

The display is open to the public until 6 December, and admission is free.
