Survey Finds Rising Loneliness and Social Isolation Across Generations

A growing number of people across different age groups are reporting feelings of loneliness and social disconnection, according to a new national survey, prompting concern among policymakers and health experts about the long‑term effects on wellbeing and community cohesion.

The study, conducted by a leading social research institute and published this week, suggests that while social media and digital communications keep people connected online, they may not be compensating for a decline in close, meaningful in‑person relationships. Researchers found that more than one in three adults feel isolated “often” or “very often,” a figure that has steadily increased over the past decade.

    Across age groups, different pressures

Although loneliness is often associated with older adults, the survey revealed that younger generations are equally affected. Among respondents aged 18 to 29, nearly 40% reported frequent feelings of social isolation — a rate higher than among those aged 65 and over.

Experts attribute this trend among younger people to a combination of social pressures, including economic uncertainty, shifting work patterns and a culture that emphasises curated online personas. Dr Emma Hughes, a sociologist specialising in mental health, said the rise of gig economy jobs and remote work has eroded traditional social networks such as workplace friendships.

“Human beings are fundamentally social,” Dr Hughes explained. “When opportunities for spontaneous, face‑to‑face interaction diminish, many people turn to screens, which can offer connectivity but not the depth of real‑world relationships.”

Impact on mental health and wellbeing

Health professionals warn that persistent loneliness can have serious consequences for both mental and physical health, including increased anxiety, depression and cardiovascular risk. The survey found that individuals who reported frequent loneliness were twice as likely to describe their overall health as “poor” compared with those who felt socially connected.

Respondents also highlighted the role of community life in their sense of belonging. Those who participated in local activities — such as volunteering, clubs or faith‑based events — reported significantly lower levels of loneliness, regardless of age.

Calls for policy action and community investment

In response to the findings, community leaders and public health advocates are urging governments to invest more in social infrastructure designed to foster connection. Suggestions include funding for local community centres, expanded support for volunteer networks, and programmes that encourage intergenerational engagement.

Councillor Rachel Kim, who leads community wellbeing initiatives in a major city, said that urban planning must consider social cohesion alongside economic development.

“In our rush to build smarter cities, we risk forgetting that people need spaces to meet, talk and belong,” she said. “Parks, community halls, and safe, welcoming public spaces are essential to social health.”

    Balancing online and offline worlds

The report also recognised the positive role that digital platforms can play when used intentionally — for example, to sustain long‑distance relationships or enhance access to support networks. However, the researchers emphasised that online interaction should supplement, not replace, regular in‑person contact.

“Technology is not the enemy,” the report states. “But it cannot fully substitute the warmth and resilience that come from direct human connection.”

The authors conclude that addressing loneliness will require a multifaceted approach, combining better social policy, community design and public awareness campaigns designed to reduce stigma and encourage people to seek connection before distress becomes chronic.
