Vaccination is entering a new era of personalised and rapid development

Vaccines have long been one of the most effective tools in public health. Now, new technologies are changing how quickly and precisely they can be developed.

The success of mRNA platforms during the COVID-19 pandemic demonstrated that vaccines can be designed and produced faster than with many traditional methods.

Researchers are now exploring how similar approaches could be used against influenza, cancer and other diseases.

The potential advantage is flexibility. Once a platform is established, scientists may be able to adapt vaccines more rapidly to new variants or emerging threats.

There is also growing interest in personalised cancer vaccines, designed to train the immune system using features specific to an individual patient’s tumour.

However, scientific progress alone does not guarantee public impact. Distribution, affordability and trust remain central challenges.

Vaccine hesitancy and misinformation have shown that public confidence can be as important as laboratory success.

Experts say the future of vaccination will depend on combining faster innovation with stronger health systems and effective communication.

In that sense, the next breakthrough may be not only in biology, but in how societies deliver and sustain trust in science.
