Empires are being re-examined through the voices of those they ruled

For much of modern history, empires were often described through the ambitions of rulers, military expansion and administrative power. Increasingly, historians are shifting attention toward the experiences of the people who lived under imperial rule.

This change is reshaping how colonial and imperial history is understood. Researchers are examining local archives, oral histories and community records to recover perspectives long marginalised in official narratives.

The result is a more complex picture. Empires could bring infrastructure, trade networks and institutional change, but they also involved coercion, extraction and deep inequalities.

Historical debate now often focuses not only on how empires expanded, but on how subject populations adapted, resisted or negotiated with imperial systems.

These perspectives are also influencing public discussions about monuments, museum collections and restitution of cultural objects.

Historians say the aim is not to replace one simplified story with another, but to recognise that imperial history was experienced differently depending on where one stood.

The legacy of empire remains visible in borders, languages, economic structures and political tensions today.

Understanding that legacy requires hearing voices that earlier histories often ignored.
