French Authorities Enforce Curfews Across Major Cities Following Nationwide Riots

French officials have instituted overnight restrictions in parts of central Paris and multiple regional cities after a weekend of unrest and looting resulted in widespread damage across the country. The security response comes after intense demonstrations linked to cost-of-living concerns and deteriorating public services escalated into destructive violence.

In Paris, police established an overnight curfew running from 23:00 to 06:00 local time in the Place de la République and the Les Halles shopping district, while banning unauthorized gatherings across several central areas. Local authorities in other major urban centers, including Marseille, Bordeaux, Nice, Lyon, and Lille, also announced partial curfews affecting public gatherings and the movement of young people.

    Local Restrictions and Security Measures

Addressing the security situation, French Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez acknowledged that police forces had lost control in certain cities during the height of the turmoil. Nuñez offered his resignation to President Emmanuel Macron on Sunday, but the Élysée Palace rejected the request, citing the necessity of maintaining operational command. President Macron called for full transparency regarding intelligence and foresight shortfalls surrounding the events.

Following an emergency meeting, Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu stated that local mayors now hold the authority to declare curfews in areas where they deem necessary. Lecornu did not rule out the possibility of declaring a national state of emergency. He also outlined plans for legislation aimed at recovering property damage costs directly from those responsible for the destruction, alongside establishing a partial unemployment support fund for workers affected by business disruptions.

    Economic Impact and Political Fallout

Demonstrations began last month over student demands regarding educational conditions before expanding to broader public grievances. Officials estimated that approximately 550,000 people took part in nationwide protests over the weekend, addressing fuel prices, inflation, and public service cutbacks. During the unrest, masked individuals set fire to vehicles and structures, including the historic 19th-century city hall in Limoges, which suffered major structural collapses.

Official reports indicate that more than 2,500 arrests have been made, while approximately 1,000 police officers sustained injuries. According to news reports, one demonstrator lost a hand due to a police crowd-control grenade. The president of France’s Chambers of Commerce and Industry noted that over 2,000 businesses were directly impacted, with total economic damages estimated in the hundreds of millions of euros.

The events have also heightened political tensions ahead of upcoming elections, with government ministers accusing political opponents of stoking unrest, charges that opposition figures have strongly rejected. In response to the ongoing situation, foreign embassies, including those of the United States, Germany, and China, issued security alerts advising their citizens to exercise caution and avoid protest areas.
