Electronic Eye Implant Helps Restore Sight in Patients With Age-Related Macular Degeneration

Researchers have announced a major breakthrough in treating age-related macular degeneration (AMD): an electronic retinal implant that helped restore partial vision to elderly patients. The findings, published today in the New England Journal of Medicine, mark a promising step toward addressing a condition that affects roughly 200 million people worldwide.

AMD is a progressive, currently incurable eye disease that typically impacts adults over 50. It occurs when aging damages the photoreceptors in the central retina, leading to gradual vision loss. In the new international trial, 38 participants—average age 79—all living with advanced dry AMD, received a miniature implant beneath their retinas. The device, about half as thick as a human hair, was administered at 17 medical centers across five European countries. One year after surgery, 80 percent of participants experienced “clinically meaningful” improvements to their vision.

“In the history of artificial vision, this represents a new era,” says Mahi Muqit, an ophthalmologist at University College London’s Institute of Ophthalmology who led the U.K. portion of the study.

The trial focused exclusively on dry AMD, the more common form of the disease. Because individuals with dry AMD retain some functional photoreceptors, the research team believed a light-sensitive implant could convert visual information into signals the brain can interpret. After receiving the implant, participants were equipped with augmented reality glasses that contain a camera connected to a small waist-mounted computer. The glasses capture images and project them as infrared light onto the implant, while AI algorithms translate the data into electrical impulses recognizable by the brain. Months of training helped patients learn how to interpret these signals and regain basic reading skills.

“This is at the forefront of science,” says Demetrios Vavvas, director of the retina service at Massachusetts Eye and Ear, speaking to the New York Times. Although not involved in the research, he describes the device as the beginning of a transformative new technology.

Still, not everyone is fully convinced. A retinal-degeneration researcher interviewed anonymously by Nature notes that the extensive visual training—and participants’ excitement about receiving an innovative device—could have influenced the results. They argue that the findings would be stronger with a placebo group receiving training and glasses but no implant.

The study’s authors acknowledge that more work lies ahead. “I don’t think we’ll ever restore full 20/20 vision with the implant alone,” says José-Alain Sahel of the University of Pittsburgh, a co-leader of the trial. “But we’re exploring strategies to significantly improve quality of life and help patients rise above the threshold of legal blindness. One of the most common requests is to recognize faces and emotions again—that’s a goal we’re actively pursuing.”

Currently, the restored vision is only black and white. Another key objective is enhancing grayscale perception to assist with facial recognition, says Daniel Palanker, an ophthalmologist and electrical engineer at Stanford University who co-led the research. Palanker also aims to increase the implant’s resolution, and early tests in rats have yielded encouraging results..
