Drones identify lethal virus in exhaled breath of Arctic whales

Scientists are using drones to collect samples of whale breath, offering new insight into the health of humpback whales and other species in the wild.

The drones are fitted with specialised equipment and flown through the mist of droplets released when whales surface to breathe through their blowholes. Analysis of these samples has revealed the presence of a highly contagious virus that has previously been linked to large-scale strandings of whales and dolphins around the world.

Researchers say the technique represents a major breakthrough in monitoring whale health. Professor Terry Dawson of King’s College London described the method as a “game-changer”, explaining that it allows scientists to detect disease in live animals without causing them stress or physical harm.

“This approach gives us vital information about pathogens affecting whales, particularly in Arctic regions where ecosystems are changing rapidly,” he said.

Helena Costa of Nord University in Norway added that the next step is to expand the use of drone sampling over longer periods. She said sustained monitoring would help scientists better understand how emerging threats — such as climate change, disease and environmental pressures — could affect whale populations in the future.

The research was carried out by a collaboration between King’s College London, The Royal (Dick) School of Veterinary Studies, and Nord University, and has been published in the journal BMC Veterinary Research.
