Scientists explore the limits of human lifespan as ageing research accelerates

The question of how long humans can live — and whether ageing itself can be slowed — is moving from theory into serious scientific investigation.

Recent advances in biology have focused on understanding the mechanisms behind ageing, including cellular damage, genetic factors and the role of telomeres — structures that protect DNA but shorten over time.

Researchers in fields such as biotechnology and genetics are exploring ways to extend healthy lifespan, not just increase years lived but improve quality of life in later decades.

Some experimental approaches include targeting so-called “senescent cells”, which accumulate with age and contribute to inflammation and disease. Others involve studying how metabolism, diet and environmental factors influence ageing processes.

While the idea of significantly extending human lifespan remains controversial, progress in related areas — such as cancer treatment and regenerative medicine — is already having measurable effects on life expectancy.

However, scientists caution that ageing is a complex, multi-factor process. There is unlikely to be a single solution or breakthrough that dramatically alters human lifespan in the near future.

There are also ethical and social questions. If lifespan were extended significantly, it could affect healthcare systems, pensions and population dynamics.

For now, the focus remains on “healthy ageing” — ensuring that longer lives are also healthier ones.

The science is still evolving, but one thing is clear: ageing is no longer seen as an unchangeable biological fact, but as a process that can be studied, and potentially influenced.
