The next tech battle is over who controls AI infrastructure

The race in artificial intelligence is no longer just about building better models — it is increasingly about controlling the infrastructure that makes those models possible.

Behind every major AI system lies a vast network of data centres, advanced chips and cloud platforms. Companies such as Nvidia, Amazon and Microsoft are competing to dominate this layer of the technology stack, investing billions into computing capacity.

At the centre of this competition are specialised AI chips, which are essential for training and running large-scale models. Demand for these processors has surged, creating supply constraints and pushing companies to secure long-term access to hardware.

Cloud computing is also becoming a strategic battleground. Businesses increasingly rely on cloud platforms not just for storage, but for access to AI tools and services. This has strengthened the position of companies that control both infrastructure and software.

Governments are paying close attention. Control over AI infrastructure is now seen as a matter of economic and national security, particularly as competition intensifies between the United States and China.

However, the concentration of power raises concerns. A small number of companies could gain significant influence over how AI is developed and deployed globally.

Experts say the outcome of this competition may determine not only which companies lead the AI industry, but also how open, accessible and regulated the technology becomes.
