Walmart taps insider John Furner to lead through AI push and economic volatility

In 2020, as COVID-19 swept across the United States, John Furner — then head of Walmart’s largest U.S. business — turned to colleagues in China for guidance. Drawing on insights from a market already months ahead in responding to the pandemic, he quickly adjusted inventory forecasts and fulfillment operations to keep up with surging demand and prevent stockouts.

Furner, a lifelong Walmart (WMT.N) insider who grew up in Arkansas and previously lived in China for two years, said at the time that the experience helped him anticipate consumer needs during rapidly shifting conditions. That ability to collaborate and adapt will be tested when he becomes Walmart’s chief executive on February 1, stepping into the role amid economic uncertainties, tariff pressures, and investor expectations around the company’s ambitious AI investments.

“The business is operating in a tough macro and competitive climate, with tariffs, pricing pressures and shifting consumer behavior,” said Matt Prescott, president of The Accountability Board, a Walmart shareholder. “We hope he can rise to the challenge.”

Walmart has performed strongly under outgoing CEO Doug McMillon, with profits up 21% and the share price quadrupling during his 13-year tenure as he transformed the retailer into a tech-driven giant. This year, customer traffic has remained robust as budget-conscious shoppers increasingly turn to Walmart’s broad, lower-priced assortment.

Yet Furner has long been viewed internally as McMillon’s heir apparent, two people familiar with the succession process told Reuters. “It was pretty obvious that John was the frontrunner,” one source said. “He’s well loved, willing to experiment, and understands that this business must constantly innovate.”

Since taking over Walmart U.S. in 2019, the 51-year-old executive has driven several major initiatives, including Walmart+, the retailer’s membership program, and the rapid expansion of its advertising arm. He has raised average hourly wages to more than $17, modernized warehouses and distribution centers, and helped scale Walmart Connect into a $4 billion advertising business since its 2021 launch.

“His collaborative leadership style and operational expertise make him well-positioned to advance Walmart’s sales and profitability, especially as the company navigates an AI-powered retail transformation,” said Jefferies analyst Corey Tarlowe. Furner’s next chapter, he added, will focus on accelerating innovation — from AI-enhanced search and customer service chatbots to partnerships with OpenAI and faster, data-driven decision-making.

    Managing a global retail empire

Furner, an avid mountain biker and licensed pilot, frequently emphasizes the value of external perspectives in fast-moving situations. “The world is too complex and moves too fast. These relationships matter,” he said in a 2024 interview reflecting on the early pandemic.

Maintaining those relationships — across governments, investors, media and advocacy groups — will be a central challenge.
“The biggest obstacle John Furner will face is becoming the public face of a $700 billion global business,” said BNP Paribas analyst Chris Bottiglieri. “It requires deft navigation of media scrutiny, investor expectations, and political and regulatory dynamics.”

The son of a Walmart employee, Furner is seen as well prepared for the role. Like McMillon, he climbed the ranks from hourly associate to merchandising, operations and sourcing roles, eventually leading Sam’s Club from 2017 to 2019 before becoming CEO of Walmart U.S., overseeing 1.5 million employees and 4,600 stores.

“I think the future is exciting,” Furner said in a video message accompanying the leadership announcement.
