French Government Faces Crisis Following Nationwide Violence and Looting

The French government is under intense political pressure following a weekend of extensive violence and looting that disrupted protests over public services and rising living costs. On Monday morning, Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu convened a crisis cabinet meeting to assess the fallout from some of the most severe public disorder seen in the country’s recent history.

The disturbances occurred alongside demonstrations on Saturday involving more than 500,000 mostly peaceful protesters. Demonstrators had gathered to voice frustration over declining access to public services, such as state education, and the increasing cost of living. However, the rallies escalated into violence when groups of masked, black-clad activists targeted commercial areas, leaving approximately 1,500 shops and businesses damaged or looted.

Political Strain and Law Enforcement Impact

Law enforcement responses included the deployment of tear gas, water cannon, and batons. The interior ministry reported that around 1,000 police officers suffered injuries during Saturday’s events, including seven who were severely hurt. Following the unrest, Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez offered his resignation, but President Emmanuel Macron declined it, asking him instead to focus on restoring public safety and pursuing those responsible for the violence.

Critics across the political spectrum, alongside several trade unions, accused the interior minister of failing to prepare adequately for the scheduled demonstrations. Yaël Braun-Pivet, president of the lower house of parliament, announced her intention to open an inquiry into the security response and the circumstances surrounding the disorder.

    Political Backlash and Upcoming Demonstrations

In a televised national address on Sunday, President Macron called for unity and promised that perpetrators would face justice. However, French media and political figures criticized the speech for lacking specific measures regarding business compensation, street security, or dialogue with educational groups. Opposition figures, including nationalist politician Marine Le Pen and left-wing leader Jean-Luc Mélenchon, heavily criticized the government’s handling of the crisis, citing administrative weakness and incompetence.

With parliament sharply divided and high public debt limiting potential economic interventions, authorities face further challenges ahead. While a school holiday offers a brief pause in student-led actions, major labor unions and yellow jacket activists have already announced widespread protests scheduled for November 5.
