Global inequality remains a defining challenge despite economic growth

Economic growth has lifted millions of people out of poverty over recent decades, but inequality — both within and between countries — remains a central global issue.

While some regions have experienced rapid development, wealth and opportunity are still unevenly distributed. In many countries, income gaps between the richest and poorest households have widened.

Organisations such as the World Bank highlight that inequality can affect access to education, healthcare and economic opportunity.

The causes are complex. Globalisation, technological change and policy decisions all play a role in shaping how wealth is distributed.

At the same time, inequality is not only economic. Differences in access to digital technology, infrastructure and political influence also contribute to disparities.

Some governments are introducing policies aimed at reducing inequality, including taxation reforms, social programmes and investment in public services.

However, progress is uneven, and debates continue over the most effective approaches.

Experts warn that persistent inequality can have wider consequences, including social unrest, reduced economic mobility and weakened trust in institutions.

As the global economy continues to evolve, addressing inequality is likely to remain one of the most important — and most difficult — challenges facing societies worldwide.
