High-Speed Train Collision in Spain Leaves at Least 68 Dead

A high-speed train collision in central Spain has left at least 68 people dead and injured dozens more, marking one of the country’s worst rail disasters in recent history. The incident occurred on Wednesday morning shortly after 09:00 local time between the municipalities of Mora and Orgaz, roughly 140 kilometres south of Madrid.

The crash involved a stationary train operated by private rail firm Iryo, carrying 147 passengers, which had stopped on the tracks due to a technical glitch. A second train, operated by state railway company Renfe with 397 passengers aboard, was travelling from Madrid to Seville when it struck the back of the stopped train. The impact caused several carriages to derail and fall down an embankment, with one carriage catching fire.

Investigation Points to System and Human Error

Spain’s Transport Minister Óscar Puente stated that the incident began with a computer failure on the stopped train. Management of the line was subsequently taken over by a 24-hour control centre located in Madrid. According to the minister, control room staff made an inexplicable decision to direct trains to resume movement without imposing speed limits, combining system malfunction with human error.

Surviving passengers recounted scenes of intense force during the impact, with individuals being thrown through carriages, trapped among damaged seating, and using broken windows to escape the wreckage. Emergency responders deployed dozens of ambulances alongside a helicopter to transport critically injured survivors to medical facilities. Spain’s Civil Guard indicated that DNA sampling from family members would be required to identify several of the victims.

    Political Reactions and Infrastructure Concerns

Visiting the crash site, Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez expressed national grief and pledged a thorough investigation to determine whether negligence contributed to the tragedy. The event follows a separate high-speed rail accident near Córdoba in January that claimed 46 lives on the same line. Sánchez noted that experiencing two severe train disasters within a single year was unacceptable.

In response to the tragedy, most Spanish political parties suspended planned campaign activities. However, the leader of the opposition People’s Party, Alberto Núñez Feijóo, called for any security failures to be firmly tackled. Meanwhile, trade union CSIF demanded the resignation of the transport minister, criticizing officials for attributing blame to control room personnel rather than accepting ministerial responsibility. The crash stands as Spain’s deadliest railway accident since 2013, when 80 people were killed near Santiago de Compostela.
