UNEP Report Warns World Is Investing 30× More in Nature Destruction Than Protection

A major new United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) report has revealed a stark imbalance in global financial priorities: for every $1 invested in protecting nature, approximately $30 is spent on activities that harm it. The findings highlight deep structural challenges in funding the fight against climate change, biodiversity loss, and ecosystem degradation — underscoring the need for a fundamental shift in how capital flows are directed worldwide.

The State of Finance for Nature 2026 report shows that harmful financial flows — including investments and subsidies tied to fossil fuels, agriculture, transport, and industrial activity — totaled around $7.3 trillion in 2023. By contrast, funding for nature-based solutions (NbS) such as ecosystem restoration, conservation and habitat protection amounted to just $220 billion, less than 3 % of its harmful counterpart. Nearly 90 % of that nature-positive investment came from public sources, with private funding lagging far behind.

    Why the Imbalance Matters

Experts warn that this imbalance undermines global efforts to safeguard critical natural systems — from forests and wetlands to oceans and soil — that support biodiversity, regulate climate, and sustain human livelihoods. Without a dramatic increase in sustainable finance, ecosystems may continue to degrade, reducing resilience to climate shocks and jeopardizing food, water, and economic security.

Nature-based solutions are widely recognized for their potential to deliver both environmental and economic benefits, including carbon sequestration, enhanced biodiversity, and disaster risk reduction. The UNEP report calls for scaling up these investments — including through public-private partnerships and innovative finance mechanisms — to align with global sustainability goals.

Calls for a “Big Nature Turnaround”

The report urges policymakers and financial leaders to shift capital away from destructive activities and toward nature-positive investments. This includes reforming subsidies that incentivize environmental harm, integrating ecosystem values into financial decision-making, and unlocking private capital for restoration efforts. Some analysts say nature-positive finance could eventually deliver high economic returns while reducing risks tied to climate and biodiversity loss.

    Global Context and Next Steps

The UNEP findings come at a critical moment as the world prepares for COP31 — the 2026 United Nations Climate Change Conference — where leaders will negotiate pathways to climate mitigation, adaptation, and nature protection.

Environmental advocates argue that without a deep transformation in funding patterns, achieving internationally agreed goals — including the Paris Agreement targets and biodiversity frameworks — will remain out of reach.

    Looking Ahead

To reverse nature’s decline, the report emphasizes that nature-positive finance must grow rapidly — ideally reaching levels that match or exceed funding for nature-harmful activities. Analysts say that achieving this “Big Nature Turnaround” would require concerted action from governments, investors, civil society and communities worldwide, making 2026 a crucial year for redefining how nature is valued and financed in the global economy.
