Streaming is reshaping global culture — but not in the way platforms expected

Streaming platforms were once expected to standardise global culture, exporting a largely uniform set of shows and films across borders. Instead, they are producing the opposite effect: a more diverse and competitive cultural landscape, where local stories are travelling further than ever before.

Companies such as Netflix, Amazon and Disney have invested heavily in international productions, aiming to attract audiences in different regions. But rather than simply adapting global formats, many local industries are now creating content that retains strong cultural identity while still achieving global reach.

Recent successes of non-English-language series and films suggest that audiences are increasingly comfortable with subtitles and culturally specific storytelling. This has helped productions from regions such as South Korea, Spain and Latin America reach global popularity.

The shift is changing how cultural influence works. Instead of flowing mainly from a few dominant centres, culture is becoming more decentralised, with multiple regions shaping global trends simultaneously.

However, the economics of streaming are also evolving. As platforms face pressure to become profitable, they are becoming more selective about which projects they fund. This has led to concerns that smaller or riskier productions could struggle to secure support.

At the same time, competition between platforms is intensifying, with each trying to secure exclusive content and retain subscribers in a crowded market.

Analysts say the long-term result may be a hybrid system: global platforms distributing content, but local industries playing a stronger role in defining what that content looks like.

In that sense, streaming has not erased cultural differences — it has amplified them.
