Climate science has made significant progress in recent years, improving the ability to predict long-term trends and extreme weather events. Yet uncertainty remains an inherent part of understanding complex global systems.

Researchers use advanced computer models to simulate interactions between the atmosphere, oceans and land systems. These models have become more accurate as computing power and data availability have increased.

Organisations such as the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change rely on these models to assess future climate scenarios and inform policy decisions.

One of the key advances has been in predicting extreme events, such as heatwaves, floods and storms. Improved modelling allows scientists to estimate how likely these events are and how they may change over time.

However, uncertainty persists due to the complexity of climate systems and the influence of human activity. Factors such as greenhouse gas emissions, land use and technological change all affect future outcomes.

Scientists emphasise that uncertainty does not mean lack of knowledge. Instead, it reflects the range of possible scenarios based on different assumptions.

The challenge for policymakers is to make decisions in the face of this uncertainty — balancing risks, costs and long-term impacts.

As climate science continues to evolve, its role is not only to predict the future, but to inform how societies respond to it.
