Cash is declining, but the politics of money is becoming more visible

Cash payments are declining in many countries as digital transactions become faster, easier and more common. Yet the disappearance of cash is revealing that money is not just economic — it is political and social.

Consumers increasingly rely on cards, apps and mobile wallets for everyday purchases. Banks, retailers and technology firms often support this shift because digital systems can reduce costs and improve efficiency.

Companies such as Visa and Mastercard play a central role in this expanding payments ecosystem.

However, the move away from cash raises important concerns. Physical money offers anonymity and universal access in ways that digital systems may not.

For some groups — including older people, low-income households or those with limited access to banking — cash remains essential.

There are also questions about resilience. Digital payment systems depend on electricity, networks and infrastructure that can fail during outages or cyber incidents.

As central banks explore digital currencies, debates about privacy, inclusion and control are becoming more prominent.

Experts say the future of money is unlikely to be entirely cashless. Instead, societies may need to balance innovation with the public functions that cash has traditionally provided.

The decline of cash is therefore not just a technological change, but a debate about who money should serve.
