Renowned film director Rob Reiner and his wife, producer Michele Singer Reiner, were found dead at their home in Brentwood, California, on Sunday, authorities have confirmed.
Their son, Nick Reiner, 32, was arrested later that day in Los Angeles and is being held on suspicion of murder. Police say the couple died as a result of a homicide.
Rob Reiner, whose work included influential films such as This Is Spinal Tap and When Harry Met Sally, had three children with Michele Singer Reiner, his wife of 36 years. Investigators are now piecing together the events that led to the couple’s deaths.
Discovery and initial investigation
The bodies were discovered by the Reiners’ youngest child, Romy, inside the family’s Brentwood residence, according to multiple sources cited by CBS News. The neighbourhood is known for its high-profile residents and upscale properties on the west side of Los Angeles.
Reports indicate that both victims suffered multiple stab wounds, although officials have not formally released the cause of death. Law enforcement officers began a homicide investigation shortly after the discovery.
Arrest of Nick Reiner
Nick Reiner was taken into custody on Sunday night and was later booked on suspicion of murder, according to records from the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department. Police Chief Jim McDonnell said on Monday that investigators had concluded Nick Reiner was responsible for the deaths following their initial inquiry at the home.
He remains in custody without bail. Prosecutors are expected to review the case on Tuesday, when the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office will decide whether to formally file charges.
Unclear motive and public speculation
Authorities have not disclosed a motive for the killings. Despite this, speculation has spread online, including political commentary linking the case to Rob Reiner’s outspoken views. These claims have been widely criticised, and police have stressed that no motive has been established.
Investigators confirmed that Rob Reiner and his son had a heated but brief argument during a gathering at the house the night before the deaths. It remains unclear whether the dispute is connected to the alleged crime.
Family history and past struggles
The Reiner family had previously spoken openly about Nick Reiner’s long battle with substance abuse. His struggles formed the basis of the semi-autobiographical 2015 film Being Charlie, which father and son co-wrote and directed together. The film explores addiction and recovery through the story of a troubled teenager.
In interviews at the time, both Rob and Michele Reiner described years of emotional strain as their son moved in and out of rehabilitation facilities and experienced homelessness as a teenager. Michele Reiner later said they often relied on professional advice rather than trusting their son’s own account of his experiences.
Rob Reiner acknowledged that the process of making the film helped repair their relationship, saying it brought them closer. Nick Reiner also said the collaboration strengthened their bond, though he expressed a desire to pursue independent projects.
Rob Reiner’s legacy
Rob Reiner had four children in total. He previously married filmmaker Penny Marshall and adopted her daughter, Tracy Reiner. He later met Michele Singer while working on When Harry Met Sally, and the couple went on to have two sons and a daughter.
Beyond filmmaking, Reiner was active in public policy. In the late 1990s, he supported initiatives directing cigarette tax revenue toward early childhood and prenatal programmes in California, arguing that early investment in children could help reduce crime, addiction and social harm later in life.
The investigation into the deaths of Rob and Michele Reiner is ongoing, and authorities say further details will be released as the case progresses.
