French Health Agency Warns Social Media Poses Risks to Teen Mental Health

A comprehensive new scientific report from the French National Agency for Food, Environmental and Occupational Health and Safety has raised serious concerns about the impact of social media on teenagers’ health, citing evidence of increased anxiety, depression, sleep disruption, and exposure to harmful content among young users.

The agency’s 522-page review synthesised findings from more than 1,000 scientific studies and expert contributions, concluding that adolescents aged 11–17 are particularly vulnerable to negative outcomes linked to prolonged social media use. Girls, in particular, are identified as being at higher risk due to pressures around body image and visual content trends.

Mental and Physical Health Concerns Highlighted

The report highlights a range of health issues associated with heavy social media engagement:

    • Poor sleep quality due to nighttime device use and blue light exposure.
    • Elevated levels of anxiety and depression tied to constant comparison and feedback-driven engagement.
    • Increased vulnerability to cyberbullying and harmful content, including material related to self-harm.

Experts point to algorithm design as a key factor, noting that recommendation systems often promote highly engaging but emotionally intense content, which can create repetitive exposure to negative material and heighten stress and emotional instability among young users.

    Policy Recommendations and Regulatory Debate

In response to the findings, the agency is calling for stronger safeguards for children online, including possible age restrictions and stricter platform design standards that prioritise youth wellbeing over engagement metrics. French health authorities have suggested banning social media access for users under 13, and some proposals even consider raising the threshold to 15 for added protection.

Similar measures are under discussion in other countries, with Australia recently introducing limits on access for under-16s — reflecting a growing global debate about how to balance digital access with young people’s health.

    Educational and Parental Action Urged

Alongside regulatory efforts, the report emphasises the importance of digital literacy education in schools and at home. Specialists highlighted that teaching youth how to critically engage with online content and set healthy limits on screen time could help mitigate risks highlighted in the review.

    Looking Ahead

As digital technologies deepen their reach in young lives, health authorities say 2026 could be a watershed moment for youth digital safety policy. The report’s authors hope its publication will encourage not only regulatory action but also broader awareness of how social media environments may influence adolescent development and wellbeing.
