Downing Street has asserted that RAF Fairford remains secure after the United States military withdrew its fleet of bombers from the Gloucestershire airbase. The Pentagon confirmed that it had returned the aircraft, believed to be approximately 12 B-1 bombers, to their home bases in America on Sunday.
The withdrawal follows an incident on September 27 when police responded to the presence of three suspicious vehicles near the Cotswolds airbase. US media reports indicated that the decision to remove the bombers was prompted by a new threat. While Whitehall sources did not dispute that Washington’s action was a response to the airbase incident, the BBC reported that the move was an operational military decision rather than a political one.
Official Responses and Security Concerns
A spokesperson for No 10 Downing Street declined to comment on the military operations of foreign nations but maintained that the base is safe. The spokesperson referenced recent comments from US President Donald Trump, who praised British police, defence, and security services, as well as remarks by UK Defence Secretary Wes Streeting regarding the country’s established methods for protecting military sites.
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio stated he would not directly connect the previous week’s security incident to the bomber redeployment, describing the movement of military assets as a routine part of international operations. However, US Vice President JD Vance later remarked that the bombers were relocated out of an abundance of caution, suggesting Iranian involvement in ongoing hostile activities against US interests.
The Investigation and Regional Impact
The incident near the airbase is currently being investigated by counter-terrorism police. Six individuals, including a UK-Iranian national, were arrested and subsequently released on bail. The New York Times reported that US commanders had received fresh details regarding an Iran-backed plot targeting RAF Fairford, prompting rapid operational decisions.
Although Tehran has denied any involvement, Iranian officials previously warned that any base utilized for actions against its territory would be considered a legitimate target. RAF Fairford has long served as a forward operating location for the US Air Force, with bombers recently flying missions to the Middle East following UK approval for defensive strikes.
For local residents, the departure of the aircraft has brought a sense of relief. Some villagers living near the base expressed satisfaction with the removal, citing persistent noise and a growing sense of vulnerability during recent weeks of heightened tension.
