US President Trump States Threats Prompted Removal of Bombers From British Airbase

President Donald Trump has confirmed that the United States relocated its military bombers from RAF Fairford in Gloucestershire, England, due to specific security threats. The Pentagon confirmed on Sunday that the B-1 bombers, believed to number around a dozen, were returned to their home stations in the US.

Speaking to reporters on Monday as he departed for Nebraska, Trump acknowledged that the relocation was not accidental. He noted that the US was aware of threats to the base and decided to move the aircraft to avoid tempting adversaries, adding that Washington knows the identity of those who made the threats but did not name them.

    Varying Accounts of the Move

The US President’s statements align with reports from American media outlets, including the New York Times, Wall Street Journal, and Axios, which cited unnamed officials claiming that a potential attack was aimed at destroying the aircraft and harming personnel. However, other US officials have presented different perspectives.

U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio downplayed the connection between the relocation and any immediate threat, describing the movement of military assets as a standard rotation. Rubio expressed continued confidence in the security of British bases and noted that UK authorities have been highly cooperative. Conversely, Vice President JD Vance stated the bombers were moved out of an abundance of caution, suggesting Iranian involvement in ongoing hostile activities.

    Prior Security Incident Under Investigation

The decision to withdraw the bombers follows a major security incident at RAF Fairford on September 27, when counter-terror police were alerted to three suspicious vehicles near the base. Six individuals, including a UK-Iranian national, were arrested and subsequently released on bail. Prime Minister Andy Burnham previously stated there were strong indications of Iranian involvement in the incident, a claim that Tehran has strongly denied.

RAF Fairford has served as a forward operating location for the US Air Force for decades. In recent months, the US had been operating B-1 and B-52 bombers from the base for missions in the Middle East, following British approval for defensive strikes. According to Christoph Bergs, a research analyst at the Royal United Services Institute, the redeployment will reduce the US military’s capacity to quickly launch sorties against Iran from this location.
