Global trade is fragmenting as economic blocs become more strategic

The era of deeply interconnected global trade is giving way to a more fragmented system, as countries prioritise security and resilience over efficiency.

For decades, globalisation was driven by the idea that goods, capital and services should move as freely as possible across borders. But recent geopolitical tensions and supply chain disruptions have pushed governments to rethink that model.

Major economies, including the United States and China, are increasingly focusing on “strategic industries” such as semiconductors, energy and critical minerals. Rather than relying on global supply chains, they are investing in domestic production or sourcing from trusted partners.

This shift is sometimes described as “de-risking” rather than full decoupling — reducing dependence without completely severing economic ties.

The World Trade Organization has warned that growing trade barriers and regional agreements could slow global economic growth and increase costs for businesses and consumers.

At the same time, new trade alliances are emerging. Countries are forming smaller, more targeted partnerships based on shared interests rather than broad global integration.

Supporters argue that this makes economies more resilient to shocks. Critics warn it could lead to inefficiency, higher prices and a more divided global economy.

As trade patterns evolve, the world may be moving toward a system that is less global — but more strategic.
