Xi receives ceremonial welcome from Trump as key US-China issues remain unresolved

Chinese President Xi Jinping received a lavish welcome from US President Donald Trump during talks in Washington, but the visit produced limited movement on the major disputes between the two countries.

China has sought progress in three central areas: trade, access to advanced technology and the future of Taiwan. Although the leaders agreed to extend a pause in their tariff dispute, the arrangement will run only from November to January. Beijing had hoped for an extension of at least a year as it seeks greater certainty through the remainder of Trump’s presidency.

The short extension leaves major questions for further negotiations, including tariffs, China’s position in rare earth supplies and Chinese access to advanced US computer chips. The limited duration suggests Washington wants Beijing to take further steps under the existing arrangement before considering longer-term concessions.

    Trade pressures and Taiwan tensions

Trade is particularly important to China as its domestic economy faces pressure. The country is selling record levels of goods abroad, according to the report, while consumer spending at home has been subdued. Youth unemployment remains high and property prices have fallen in a country where about 80% of people own their homes.

Xi again presented US arms sales to Taiwan as a red line for Beijing. The United States is legally required to provide the self-governing island with the means to defend itself. In May, Xi warned Trump that poor handling of the issue could lead the two countries to collide or enter conflict.

Trump delayed approval of a $14bn arms package for Taiwan, calling it a negotiating tool with Beijing. Xi told the US president on Thursday that he hoped Washington would maintain what he described as the correct position of opposing Taiwan independence. Trump had not publicly responded to those remarks, while facing bipartisan pressure to sustain US backing for Taiwan.

    AI discussion and diplomatic symbolism

The two leaders also discussed artificial intelligence, though it was not clear whether they reached agreement on safeguards or on holding an AI summit. Xi said AI should remain under human control, while Trump has recently dismissed concerns that the technology could lead to human extinction.

China also announced that two pandas, Ping Ping and Fu Shuang, will arrive in Atlanta within days, reviving a long-standing element of Chinese diplomatic outreach. The visit included an airport greeting, red-carpet ceremony and state banquet, imagery that was positively received by audiences in China and reinforced Xi’s standing as Trump’s equal.

Despite the warm public display and Trump’s reference to a „truly great friendship,” the central competition between the two powers remains unresolved. Further announcements were possible as the leaders prepared to meet again for tea and a visit to the National Archives.
