AI is moving from the cloud into everyday devices — and changing how technology is used

Artificial intelligence is beginning to shift away from distant data centres and into the devices people use every day — a transition that could reshape how technology is designed, controlled and experienced.

Until recently, most advanced AI systems relied on cloud computing, processing data on powerful remote servers. Now, companies are increasingly focusing on “on-device AI”, where tasks are handled directly on smartphones, laptops and other personal devices.

Technology firms such as Apple, Qualcomm and Samsung are developing specialised chips capable of running AI models locally. This allows features such as voice recognition, image processing and personal assistants to function faster and with greater privacy.

The advantages are significant. On-device AI reduces reliance on internet connections, lowers latency and limits the amount of personal data sent to external servers.

However, the shift also creates new challenges. Devices must balance performance with battery life, and developers must adapt software to run efficiently on smaller, less powerful systems.

Experts say the long-term impact could be substantial. Instead of AI being something users “access”, it may become something embedded — constantly present, personalised and largely invisible.

This transition could redefine the relationship between people and technology, making AI less of a tool and more of an environment.
