At least eight people were killed in overnight Russian missile strikes on Kyiv and the surrounding region, Ukrainian authorities said on Thursday, as rescue teams searched damaged buildings for people who may remain trapped.
Ukraine’s State Emergency Service, known as DSNS, described the assault as a massive attack. It said residential apartment buildings and warehouses were among the sites hit. At least 33 people were reported injured, while emergency crews pulled two survivors from the rubble of destroyed structures.
Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko said a children’s hospital was damaged during the strikes. Windows at the hospital were broken and nearby vehicles caught fire, he said. He also reported damage at an industrial facility in the Solomyanskyi district in south-western Kyiv.
In the wider Kyiv region, one man was killed and another person was wounded in the Brovary district, according to regional governor Tymur Tkachenko. Authorities had warned residents overnight to seek shelter, while missile alerts continued as the Ukrainian air force reported missiles heading towards the capital.
Power outages and regional alerts
The strikes damaged energy infrastructure and left thousands of properties in parts of the Kyiv region without electricity, according to the report. Technicians were working to restore power.
Romania’s defence ministry said a drone entered the country’s airspace near its northern border with Ukraine, prompting an air-raid alert. The ministry said the drone crashed in an uninhabited area about 13 kilometres east of Galați, causing a small fire that was later extinguished. It said there were no casualties or material damage.
Poland’s military said it had begun defensive air operations to protect its airspace. Poland shares part of its south-eastern border with Ukraine.
Kyiv has faced near-nightly attacks in recent weeks, some of which have caused heavy casualties. President Volodymyr Zelensky said that more than a dozen Ukrainian regions had been targeted over the past week, with Russia launching more than 1,550 attack drones, 1,560 guided aerial bombs and 62 missiles. The conflict has continued alongside Ukrainian attacks inside Russia, while efforts to secure a ceasefire have shown little progress.
