Wildlife is adapting to cities — but not always in ways humans expect

As cities expand and natural habitats shrink, wildlife is increasingly adapting to urban environments — creating a new and often unpredictable relationship between humans and nature.

Species such as foxes, raccoons and certain bird populations are thriving in cities, taking advantage of food availability, fewer predators and warmer microclimates. In some regions, animals have begun to alter their behaviour, becoming more nocturnal or changing feeding patterns to coexist with human activity.

Researchers say this trend reflects both resilience and pressure. While some species adapt successfully, many others decline as ecosystems are fragmented or destroyed.

Urban wildlife can also create challenges. Increased contact between humans and animals raises the risk of conflict, including property damage, road accidents and potential disease transmission.

At the same time, some cities are beginning to rethink how they integrate nature into urban planning. Green spaces, wildlife corridors and biodiversity-focused design are being introduced to support ecosystems within built environments.

Experts argue that the future of nature may depend partly on how well cities accommodate non-human life.

Rather than separating urban areas from nature, the emerging model suggests a more complex coexistence — one that requires careful management and long-term planning.
